Half day with Julie Downard

Julie will offer some thoughts on what it means to have balance in our practice, and how we can cultivate this both on and off the cushion.  What we might think of as our meditation practice is really just one aspect of the path, which also includes developing our understanding of the framework our practice sits within, heart-centred practices, and compassion in action. Julie will also share some of Bhikkhu Analayo’s beautiful teachings on spaciousness and loving kindness, from his recent NZ retreat.

The afternoon will include meditation instructions, sitting and walking mediation, and guidance on the theme.  All are welcome, no experience is necessary.

About the teacher:

Julie Downard came out as a meditator in 1991, after 18 months of surreptitiously checking out what her flatmates Yanai Postelnik and Russell Walker were saying.  After the hit from that first ten-day retreat wore off Julie went back for more, becoming a regular retreat junkie.  A love affair with India followed, and during the following two decades Julie sat retreats there several times, survived a three-month retreat at Gaia House in England and branched out into Zen with two months at San Francisco Zen Centre.  She co-founded Southern Insight Meditation in 1998 with an invitation to Subhana Barzaghi to come to Christchurch and teach and has been teaching on retreats and Dharma Gatherings herself since 2007.
