Southern Insight Meditation are delighted to be hosting the next dharma gathering at Staveley Camp in January 2016.

Dharma Gatherings were started by Christopher Titmuss, initially in India.  They now also run in Australia, the UK and the USA.  A dharma gathering has some silent meditation, but it also includes workshops, discussion forums, dharma talks, and open inquiry sessions, which provide numerous opportunities for discussing the teachings of the Buddha.  It is a lot of fun and there are plenty of opportunities to meet and spend time with good friends and to bring along the family.  It is an excellent way to cultivate a strong sense of community.

These gatherings cultivate a depth of inquiry into the heart of awakening.  They help us explore how the Buddha’s wise and compassionate teachings can be integrated into the political, social, cultural and environmental spheres of our daily lives to bring about a culture of awakening for the welfare and benefit of all beings. There is a greater emphasis on engaged Buddhist practice than occurs in the silent retreats that we run.

A dharma gathering is a fantastic introduction to the dharma. Beginners are very welcome!

      Teachers

This year we will have 6 teachers attending the gathering:

Subhana Barzaghi,  Jeremy Logan, and Arthur Wells will lead.

Di Robertson and Julie Downard from Southern Insight, and Sean Weaver, a new Zen teacher from Golden Bay, will also be attending and contributing to the gathering.

Subhana Barzaghi has practised meditation for over 30 years, and teaches in both the Insight Meditation and Zen Buddhist traditions. She teaches seven-day intensive retreats in India, Australia and New Zealand. In 1996, Subhana became the first Australian Zen Roshi and is the spiritual director of the Sydney and Melbourne Zen centres. She is also the founder of the Kwan Yin Zen Centre in Lismore. Subhana is the mother of two children and works as a counsellor and psychotherapist in Sydney.

Jeremy Logan has been involved in insight meditation for the last 30 years, spending several years in the east and in Europe learning and practicing meditation. He has been teaching retreats since 1991 in New Zealand and has taught in India. He lives in the Wairarapa, working as a counsellor and facilitating Stopping Violence programmes for men. He recently featured on the front page of the Listener.

Arthur Wells is a Quaker and a teacher in the Diamond Sangha Zen lineage. His background is in social work and counselling, like Jeremy, with a long experience in leading stopping violence programmes for men. Arthur used to teach comparative religion at University and is working towards an inclusive, secular, scientifically sound account of Buddhist practice.
